No. 1520 - Deloraine - Kanangra - Chapel of the Good Shepherd (1998)
Deloraine is a historic tourist town situated on the Meander River approximately halfway between the cities of Launceston and Devonport. The settlement dates to the 1830s and was named by the surveyor, Thomas Scott, after Sir William Deloraine, a character in Sir Walter Scott's poem "The Lay of the Last Minstrel”.
Kanangra is nursing home established by the Anglican church in the late 1980s. The scheme was made possible by bequest made by Mr Ira Cook, a local farmer from Caveside. Kanangra is an indigenous word for "beautiful view".

The origins of the project is described in an article published in the Western Tiers:
“Last Sunday at the Church of the Holy Redeemer, history was made when the Anglican Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Reverend Phillip K. Newell blessed the development of Kanangara the 25 bed hostel for the aged which is to be built over the next 6 months. It was the first time Bishop Newell had conducted a service in any church other than one under his own jurisdiction, the Church being a Roman Catholic one. It was also the first time that the Catholic Church has had a service conducted by a Bishop other than a Catholic one. Also taking part in the service was the Roman Catholic Church's Monsignor Philip Green who deputised for His Grace Archbishop D'Arcey who is in Rome, the acting parish priest Fr Pat McAnany and the Anglican parish minister Rev. Chris Archer”.
“The project of building Kanangra is one of such universal goodwill that these two churches of the Christian faith, and worshipers from many other denominations also, were happy to join together for the blessing of the home, and turn the first sod for the digging of the foundations. Kanangra will be an in between step for the elderly who are not quite capable of looking after themselves in a unit such as those at St Marks Court, but do not need to be in Grenoch or hospital….The brainchild of the award-winning architect, Mr Robert Morris-Nunn, Kanangra has a distinctly rural influence….The builders are Mathews Constructions Pty Ltd of Devonport and the 6 month construction period should begin this month…”.
Kanangra was officially opened by Bishop Newell on 21 July 1990. In 1998 a chapel was built within the complex. It was built at a cost of $50 000 provided from a bequest from Bev Pratt. The Chapel of the Good Shepherd was dedicated in October 1998.
A feature of the chapel is a stained glass window salvaged from Christ Church at nearby Exton. The window had been installed at Christ Church in 1963 by Miss Evelyn Newton, in memory of her family. When the church was closed the congregation requested that the window be removed and stored for safekeeping. It was kept in the organ loft of the bell tower at St Mark's in Deloraine where it lay forgotten until 1997 when the chapel was built at Kanangra. It was installed in the chapel with rear lighting fitted to illuminate it.

Another feature of the chapel is a cross and two candlesticks carved by soldiers at Gallipoli. These items were donated by Bishop Blackwood. Between 1912 and 1920 Blackwood served a chaplain in the Australian Armed Forces and received the Military Cross at Villers-Bretonneux after giving up his gas mask to a wounded soldier. The cross was previously housed at St Christopher's Chapel at Ashley Boys Home which was demolished in 1999 to make way for the Ashley Detention Centre.
