No. 1663 - South Hobart - Rivulet - Our Lady of the Southern Cross Chapel (2021)

Rivulet is a residential Aged Care Facility situated alongside the Hobart Rivulet which runs past the property. Rivulet was acquired by Southern Cross Care in 2020. Southern Cross Care was established in October 1972 by the Knights of the Southern Cross, a Catholic community group of laymen with a mission to provide dignified and respect-based care for the elderly.

The Rivulet Aged Care facility on Gore Street is located on a site deeply layered with Hobart's colonial history. It was once the site of the Derwent Distillery established in 1823 and the area evolved into a major brewing and manufacturing hub. In 1872, William Gracie (a former manager at Cascade Brewery) took over the business. He demolished the old structures to build a new, five-storey stone and brick Artillery Brewery in 1873. In 1883, the premises were leased to Johnstone Brothers (Messrs. Johnstone and Co.). They converted the brewery into a steam-powered woollen mill. The mill produced blankets and tweeds before relocating to Molle Street in 1898. After World War II, Frank Hickman used the building as a joinery workshop. During the devastating February 1967 Black Tuesday bushfires the prominent five-storey factory building caught fire and was subsequently demolished. The only surviving structures from the historic complex are the brewer's home (Gore Street Cottage) and the brewery storehouse. These brick and stone buildings have been preserved and integrated into the Southern Cross Care residential aged care complex.

Following Southern Cross Care’s acquisition of the site plans were made to establish a chapel for use by the residents.

On 29 October 2021 the new chapel was opened and blessed by Archbishop Porteous. The chapel, situated on the ground floor of ‘The Lodge’ was dedicated to Our Lady of the Southern Cross, patron saint of the Knights of the Southern Cross. The chapel’s furnishings and sacred items have come from Mary’s Grange chapel at Taroona. [ See No.1645 ] While regular Catholic Mass is held in the chapel, it is also a non-denomination space available for use by all denominations and beliefs.
