No. 1636 - New Town - Rosary Gardens - Rosary Chapel (1994-2026)

Rosary Gardens is a Catholic aged care facility located at St John’s Park at New Town. Before the 1990s St John's Park was a precinct with facilities for aged care as well as housing a range of health and welfare services. The site was originally the location of the King's Orphan Schools and St John's Anglican church.

Rosary Gardens was purchased from the State government by Southern Cross Care in 1994. Southern Cross Care was established in October 1972 by the Knights of the Southern Cross, a Catholic community of laymen with a mission to provide dignified and respect-based care for the elderly. Southern Cross Care Head Office is also located at the New Town site.

A chapel was established at Rosary Gardens in the mid 1990s and has been regularly used as a place of worship for 30 years.

In 2025 Southern Cross Care announced plans to close Rosary Gardens due to a shift from residential aged care towards home based care. The property was purchased by the State Government in 2026. Rosary Gardens will remain open and operational until 30 June 2026.

I love history and photography and also have an interest in architecture. When I started this blog in 2017 I had the goal of photographing every historical church in Tasmania. This was initially driven by the proposed mass sell-off of Anglican churches. I was concerned that these buildings would be modified and no longer be accessible once in private hands. As the years have passed this goal has changed to writing short histories of each and every church built in Tasmania, of which there are about 1600.   My earliest posts are rather amateurish but my research and writing has improved somewhat over the years.  In time my hope is to revise and update every article to a publishable standard. I have received an overwhelming amount of material from followers of the blog and I will incorporate this into the articles in the revision phase. No. 1242 - Launceston - Mount Pleasant - Henry Reed's Chapel - "The Big Room"

Mount Pleasant is an Italianate-Victorian mansion on a hill above South Launceston. It is perhaps one of the finest colonial houses in northern Tasmania. It was built in 1865 by John Crookes (1805-1870), a prominent merchant, churchman and politician. The property was acquired by Henry Reed when he returned to Tasmania in 1873. Henry Reed was a wealthy businessmen and an ardent evangelist who made a significant contribution to the Christian cause in Australia and in Britain. Reed was born in Doncaster, England in 1806. At the age of 20 he sailed for Hobart arriving in April 1827. From Hobart he walked to Launceston, a distance of 120 miles. Reed had a deep religious experience in the early 1830s when a small boat he was rowing overturned on the Tamar River and he almost drowned. Once ashore, he knelt down to give thanks for his deliverance. This incident had an enormous influence on his religious life. No. 592 - Gretna - St Mary the Virgin - "Worthy of Imitation"

Gretna is a small township in the Derwent Valley approximately 60 kilometres from Hobart. The area was originally known as Stony Plains Hut and Macquarie Plains. The name Gretna was adopted in the early 20th century. The origin of this name comes from a local farm called ‘Gretna Green’ and also an Inn established in the 1860’s which bore the same name. Another Inn, the Woolpack Inn, was the scene of a gunfight between the bushranger Martin Cash and members of the local constabulary. Gretna’s only church stood a few hundred metres from the inn and Cash and his gang hid in the bush near the church until nightfall prior to raiding the Inn. For many years St Mary’s was known as “The Woolpack Church”. St Mary’s the Virgin was built in 1847 and was opened and consecrated by Bishop Nixon on 1 June 1848.
